RETIN A

Retin-A  for Anti-Ageing Skin Treatment

Retinoic acid-based gels or creams, are topical preparations that contain the active ingredient tretinoin, which is a derivative of vitamin A. It was introduced in the early 1970s as a prescription medication for acne. Older patients using it started to report an unexpected benefit; not only did their spots disappear, but fine lines, freckles and pigmentation faded or vanished as well. In addition, many reported that their skin took on a more youthful look.

Initially the developer of the product, a dermatologist named Albert Kligman at the University of Pennsylvania, was quite sceptical of the claims. However, he later began studies to determine the effects of retinoic acid preparations on sun-damaged skin. With a team of researchers, he took skin biopsies and examined the tissue under a microscope. ‘To our surprise, there were changes that were quite dramatic, even startling’. explained Kligman, who published his findings in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

The retinoic acid preparation had accelerated skin-cell turnover, stimulated blood-vessel growth and boosted production of collagen and elastin fibres. His conclusion: Retinoic acid can help ease and even correct some of the effects of prolonged exposure to the sun, which is one the major environmental factors in skin ageing.

Retin A is prescribed to treat the following skin conditions:

How Retin-A Works

Retin-A stimulates the skin to produce collagen and new cells. The benefits are evident after about 7 weeks of regular application. Medical strengths of tretinoin are needed for the treatment to be effective, and these can only be provided by a qualified practitioner such as a doctor, dentist or nurse. Treatment must be continued for the benefits to be maintained.

How Retina A is Used

Retin A is usally applied at bed time after cleansing with a mild alcohol-free cleanser. The skin is patted dry after application. Whilst you are having Retin A treatment, it is essential to protect the skin with a high factor UVA and UVB sunscreen, which should be applied every morning. Your practitioner will suggest the most suitable regime and also additional skin care products to be used whilst you are using Retin A.

Side Effects

How you react to Retin A treatment depends upon a number of factors including the concentration of the product and your skin type and condition. The skin may feel dry, sensitive or sunburnt and there can be peeling. Usually the side effects reduce with time, but it is important to inform your practitioner if you are at all concerned about any symptoms. If symptoms are severe your practitioner may reduce the concentration of your product.
It is usual to discontinue Retin A treatment a few days before some treatments such as Genuine Dermaroller.
